On it was the first piece of mine that sidestepped movement invention as a default means of generating material. I made the solo with stage performance in mind, but began the process with the materials most readily at hand: a stack of T-shirts and the limited floor space in my bedroom. Devising tasks, drawing diagrams, reflecting on process through writing: I allowed all of these modes not only to remain in conversation with one another, but also to play equal and fluid roles in the piece's development. Similar questions and concepts reemerged two years later (in a different guise) in a series of studies called only 1 in the room.
